10 Historical “Facts” Schools Taught That Turned Out to Be Wrong

Many of us grew up hearing the same historical “facts” in classrooms, textbooks, documentaries, and trivia games. Some were repeated so often that they started to feel impossible to question. The problem is that history is constantly being reexamined as researchers uncover new evidence, revisit old sources, and correct simplified stories that were passed down for generations.

Some of these school-taught claims were oversimplified. Others were based on myths, outdated scholarship, or stories that became more famous than the truth. Once those versions make their way into textbooks and popular culture, they can be hard to shake, even after historians have moved on.

In this 24/7 Tempo slideshow, we look at 10 historical “facts” many people learned in school that are now considered wrong, misleading, or incomplete. From familiar classroom myths to stories that left out important context, these examples show how much the version of history people remember can change over time.
