Some bands try their luck at a particular sound for years but still come up empty-handed. If they don't throw in the towel, it leads to profound transformations in sound and sensibility. Not all groups are created equal, however. Some bands managed to take over the pop charts without changing their sound in the slightest.
There's something to be said for the purity of form and function. Add in an artist's faith in their work that borders on delusion, and you have a surprising recipe for success. Bands like AC/DC or Chicago started with a sound and stuck with it until it brought Billboard chart glory. Let's explore 10 rock bands that took over the pop charts, even briefly, without changing their sound.
1. AC/DC
No band found their calling and stuck to their guns quite like AC/DC. Even after the death of their original lead singer, Bon Scott, the band kept on kicking, and for good reason. The second iteration of AC/DC kept the sound but found success, with multiple songs reaching the Billboard Hot 100.
2. Genesis
Though Genesis started as a prog-rock band, they really didn't change their sound much over the years. Instead, they took their prog roots and infused them with a pop sensibility. This kept their sound consistent and eventually celebrated. Genesis counts one number-one hit and six others in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.
3. Led Zeppelin
British blues rockers Led Zeppelin came out of the gate swinging. They retained their blues sound with its rock bluster throughout their long and storied career. This brought them nearly a dozen singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
4. The Beatles
No band became alienated by success quite like the Beatles. While they eventually shifted their sound from pop to more psychedelic fare, they found their biggest success with a tried-and-true pop formula. This netted them an incredible 35 Top 10 hits.
5. Chicago
The band Chicago once described themselves as a "rock and roll band with horns." While literal, in the sense that they had a noted horn section giving their sound elements of classical and pop music, it's also symbolic. That horn was a horn of plenty, as Chicago's characteristic sound earned them over 100 million record sales and 20 Top 10 singles.
6. The Rolling Stones
Like the aforementioned Led Zeppelin, fellow English blues rockers The Rolling Stones embarked on a musical career by combining old blues standards with new rock verve. An incredibly consistent band, even through all the ups and downs, The Rolling Stones have earned an impressive 23 Top 10 hits.
7. Coldplay
If Coldplay can be considered a rock band, they make rock music of the most accessible variety. That said, the band's sound remained the same from scrappy obscurity to pop-rock superstardom. Songs like "Viva La Vida" and "Speed of Sound" hit the top of the pop Billboard Hot 100 chart and stayed there for weeks.
8. The Killers
Hailing from Las Vegas, Nevada, The Killers always had a flair for the dramatic. Yet, they couched the theatrics in decidedly pure rock and roll. This netted them huge success, with a single number-one hit and a slew of others in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.
9. The Who
From the get-go, The Who were brash, boisterous, but blissful in their arrangements. They stuck to their hard rock guns throughout the '60s and '70s. This consistency brought them accolades and success, especially in the form of Billboard Hot 100 charters, including one number-one single.
10. Queen
Like a few other bands on this list, Queen hit the scene with a rock sound accentuated with operatic drama. Sensing a good formula, the band stuck with it and found unparalleled success. In the 1970s, Queen scored four Top 10 hits, including two number-one hits. Remarkably, all these songs stayed on the charts for dozens of weeks each.
