40 Completely False "Facts" You Probably Still Believe Today

False facts have always had a way of sticking around. Long before the internet made misinformation easier to spread, myths traveled through classrooms, family stories, trivia books, and simple word of mouth. Once enough people repeated something, it started to sound true, even when the evidence said otherwise.

Today, those old misconceptions are joined by viral posts, half-remembered history, bad science, and claims that get repeated so often they feel impossible to question. Some are harmless bits of trivia. Others distort history, science, animals, food, health, or the way we understand the world around us.

To identify 38 completely false “facts” you probably still believe, 24/7 Tempo reviewed a range of debunked myths, common misconceptions, and disproven beliefs from recent history. Many of these claims have been corrected by scientific research, historical records, or expert sources, yet they continue to survive because they are memorable, surprising, or just familiar.

In many cases, the falsehood began with a misunderstanding, an exaggerated story, or a single questionable source. From there, it spread like a game of telephone, becoming more convincing with each retelling. These are the common “facts” that are not actually true.
