The Tallest Dam in the World Wasn’t Built by Humans

At first glance, it is easy to assume the tallest dams in the world are the result of massive human engineering projects. Structures like the Hoover Dam have become symbols of what people can build when faced with the challenge of controlling water on a grand scale. But not every record-breaking dam was designed or constructed by human hands.

In fact, the tallest dam on Earth was created entirely by nature during a single, dramatic event. The Usoi Dam in Tajikistan formed after a powerful earthquake triggered a massive landslide, blocking a river and creating what is now one of the largest natural dams in the world. Over time, it has held back an enormous volume of water, rivaling even the most ambitious man-made structures.

This slideshow takes a closer look at how this natural dam came to be, how it compares to famous engineered dams, and why it remains one of the most remarkable geological formations on the planet. From its sudden origin to its lasting impact on the surrounding region, the story of the Usoi Dam highlights just how powerful and unpredictable nature can be.
