Car Theft Fell Sharply in 2025, but These States Still Have the Highest Rates

Vehicle theft dropped sharply across the United States in 2025, with 659,880 vehicles reported stolen nationwide, down 23.2% from the year before. That works out to roughly one stolen vehicle every 48 seconds. But the improvement was far from even, and drivers in some states still face theft rates several times higher than those in the safest parts of the country.

Using 2025 data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, 24/7 Tempo ranked all 50 states by motor-vehicle thefts per 100,000 residents. California now has the highest statewide theft rate, followed by Nevada and New Mexico, while New Hampshire sits at the opposite end of the list. The rankings also show how dramatically the picture has changed since 2022, with several former hot spots posting some of the country's largest declines.
