The States Where Alzheimer’s Deaths Are Rising Fastest

Dementia refers to a range of symptoms tied to severe cognitive decline, most commonly caused by Alzheimer's disease. According to the Mayo Clinic, more than 55 million people worldwide live with dementia, including about 6.9 million Americans age 65 and older with Alzheimer's. The disease is progressive, has no cure, and is currently the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.

CDC data show that more than 110,000 Americans with Alzheimer's have died each year since 2015, and deaths linked to the disease have risen 22% nationwide over the past decade.

Using CDC data, Tempo identified the states where Alzheimer's deaths are rising fastest. States are ranked by the percentage increase in reported deaths between 2014 and 2023. Only states with at least a 10% increase were included. Supplemental demographic data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey.

Across the 37 states on this list, Alzheimer's deaths increased between 13% and 116% over the 10-year period. While risk factors include genetics and lifestyle, age remains the strongest driver, and many of the increases coincide with aging state populations.

These are the states where Alzheimer's deaths are surging.
