Even though it's been four years since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, COVID-19 is still impacting many people across the country. Like the flu, there are many variants of COVID and the rates of infection go up and down, depending on many factors. There is data to determine the states where COVID-19 is the worst right now.

According to the CDC, the KP.3 variant currently makes up about 25% of all COVID-19 cases in the nation. The current rates of COVID-19 are high nationwide, but some states are much higher than others. In the states with high COVID rates, there are also high rates of emergency department visits diagnosed as COVID. The rate of emergency room visits due to COVID-19 is the highest it's been since February of this year.

When we look at COVID cases by state, some of the states with the lowest rates are Wyoming, North Dakota, and Vermont. Overall, the rates of COVID-19 deaths in these states are low compared to some of the more populated states like Texas and Florida. (Click here to compare these numbers to rates from earlier this year.)

Since the rates of positive COVID tests are constantly changing, it's important to look at the most updated information when determining the states where COVID-19 is the worst.

Methodology:

To determine the states where COVID-19 is the worst right now, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on recent COVID-19 hospital admissions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. States were ranked based on the percentage of emergency department visits diagnosed as COVID-19 in the week of July 14-20, 2024. Supplemental data on the number of COVID-19 deaths in the past three months; the total number of deaths due to COVID-19 since January 2020; and the COVID-19 test positivity rate for the week of July 14-20, 2024 also came from the CDC. Three states – Oklahoma, Minnesota, and Missouri – had insufficient emergency department visit data and were excluded. Population data used to adjust death counts per capita came from the U.S. Census Bureau's Population and Housing Unit Estimates program and is for July 1, 2022.
