7 Celebrity Wines That Are More Than Just a Famous Name

Celebrity wine can be a gamble. Sometimes a famous name is doing most of the work. Other times, there is a legitimate winery, experienced winemaker, serious vineyard sourcing, and some very good wine hiding behind the celebrity label.

That second group is more interesting. John Legend works with a longtime Napa Valley producer. Dwyane Wade built his label with the Pahlmeyer family. Kyle MacLachlan has been making highly rated Washington wine for two decades, while Maynard James Keenan has become one of the most visible figures in Arizona's growing wine industry.

We looked at current winery information, vineyard and production details, and independent coverage and ratings from major wine publications. Taste will always be personal, but these seven celebrity-backed wine projects have considerably more behind them than a recognizable name on the label.

John Legend did not simply lend his name to a random bottle. His LVE, or Legend Vineyard Exclusive, collection is produced in collaboration with Raymond Vineyards, the longtime Napa Valley winery now part of Jean-Charles Boisset's portfolio. The current lineup includes Cabernet Sauvignon, red blend, Chardonnay, rosé, and sparkling wines from California and France.

There is some critical backing here, too. The 2021 LVE Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon received 93 points from Decanter, while Wine Enthusiast gave the 2023 Carneros Chardonnay 90 points and named it a Best Buy. Legend also remains involved in the LVE wine club, which sends members four LVE and Raymond bottles three times a year. Celebrity project, yes. Pure celebrity gimmick, not really.

Dwyane Wade's interest in wine eventually became Wade Cellars, which he founded as a partnership with Napa Valley vintner Jayson Pahlmeyer and the Pahlmeyer family. The brand traces its first vintage to 2012 and officially came together after Wade visited Napa during the 2014 harvest. Its portfolio now ranges from limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon to the more accessible Three by Wade line.

The wines have earned respectable reviews beyond the basketball connection. Wine Spectator gave the 2022 Three by Wade Chenin Blanc 90 points, while the 2021 Wade Cabernet Sauvignon from Lamoreaux Vineyard received 92 points. Wade has also taken his wine education seriously enough to join the executive leadership board for the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis.

Kyle MacLachlan may have one of the more convincing claims to the word "vintner" on this list. The Washington native released the first vintage of Pursued by Bear in 2005 and remains personally involved with the wines, working with winemaker Daniel Wampfler and growers in areas including Yakima Valley, Walla Walla Valley, and Horse Heaven Hills.

The results have held up with professional critics. The inaugural Pursued by Bear Cabernet Sauvignon earned 91 points from Wine Spectator, and later vintages have continued landing in the 90s. The current portfolio includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Baby Bear Syrah, Blushing Bear Rosé, Bear Cub wines, and the Twin Bear label. The name, appropriately enough for an actor, comes from one of Shakespeare's most famous stage directions: "Exit, pursued by a bear."

Snoop Dogg took a different route from the vineyard-owning celebrities on this list. He partnered with established wine brand 19 Crimes to create the CALI by Snoop line, beginning with Cali Red. According to Wine Spectator, Snoop personally tasted the potential blends and selected the final combination used for the original wine rather than simply licensing his image to the bottle.

The line has expanded well beyond that first red blend. As of 2026, 19 Crimes sells Snoop Dogg Cali Red Blend, Cali Rosé, Cali Gold sparkling wine, and a limited-release Cali Rose Gold sparkling rosé. These are affordable, mass-market wines rather than collector bottles, and reviews vary accordingly. Still, there is a genuine collaboration behind one of the most recognizable celebrity labels in the supermarket wine aisle.

Calling Maynard James Keenan a celebrity with a wine label undersells what he has been doing in Arizona. The Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer frontman founded Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards roughly two decades ago and has become a prominent advocate for Arizona wine. Wine Enthusiast has described Keenan's involvement as extending well beyond a celebrity vanity project.

Caduceus and Merkin now maintain vineyard sites across Arizona, including six in the Verde Valley and the Al Buhl Memorial Vineyard near Willcox. The operation reports about 110 acres under vine and annual production of roughly 14,000 cases across its brands. Keenan has also pushed for recognition of the Verde Valley as a distinct wine region; it became a federally designated American Viticultural Area in 2021.

Francis Ford Coppola's connection to wine predates the modern celebrity-label boom by decades. He and his wife, Eleanor, began their Napa Valley wine journey after purchasing the historic Inglenook property in 1975. The separate Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Sonoma County eventually became home to brands including Diamond Collection, Director's Cut, Francis Coppola Reserve, and Archimedes.

There has been an important ownership change, though. Delicato Family Wines acquired Francis Ford Coppola Winery and its wine portfolio in 2021. Coppola received an equity stake in Delicato and joined its board of directors, while the winery and wines continued carrying his name. The current lineup still includes the 2021 Archimedes Cabernet Sauvignon, which received 90 points from Wine Enthusiast, along with the 2021 Francis Coppola Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2017 Reserve Petite Sirah Dessert Wine.

Mary J. Blige created Sun Goddess in partnership with Marco Fantinel and his family's winery in Friuli Venezia Giulia, one of Italy's best-known white-wine regions. Blige has said her own preference for Pinot Grigio led her to investigate Friuli and ultimately visit the Fantinel estate before the collaboration began.

The wines are produced from vineyards owned by the Fantinel family in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Sun Goddess began with Pinot Grigio Ramato and Sauvignon Blanc and has since expanded to include Prosecco and Merlot. The Ramato is particularly interesting: instead of immediately removing the skins as with most white Pinot Grigio, the grapes spend a short period in skin contact, giving the wine its pale copper-pink color. There is a famous face attached to the bottle, but the wine itself is firmly rooted in an established Italian wine region.
