Each of the 50 United States is so completely different. They are each defined by specific nuances — foods, cultural differences, and more — that make them unique. In addition to unique traits, each state also has an event that took place in history that is distinctive to that state.

24/7 Tempo reviewed state historical information and data reports for significant events throughout U.S. history to determine the most important event in the history of each state. What we found is that many states are notable for their contributions to the scientific or economic advancement of the state or nation as a whole. Some, unfortunately, are best known for major tragedies or natural disasters that altered the life of thousands, if not millions, of Americans.

Here are the most significant and noteworthy events in each American state's history.
