Many of us know an awful lot about our favorite TV shows, authors, musicians, and travel destinations but when it comes to our own country, we know extremely little. According to the Annenberg Public Policy Center, a vast majority of Americans are uneducated about their basic rights outlined in the U.S. Constitution. Yet, these are fundamentals, essential things everyone should know about the U.S., especially its citizens.

Of the 1,482 adults they surveyed, the results were depressing and explained Americans' current apathy and ignorance of basic government structure. Regarding the First Amendment, they discovered:

  • 77% named freedom of speech
  • 40% were able to name freedom of religion
  • 33% named the freedom to assemble
  • 28% Freedom of Press
  • 9% knew they could petition the government.

These weren't the only essential things that Americans were unaware of. Slightly more than half knew how many branches of government there were, and some couldn't name any branches. To see the full report, visit the annual Annenberg Public Policy Center survey.

Here are essential things everyone should know about the U.S.
