The United States recently celebrated its 248th birthday on July 4, 2024, a day known as Independence Day. This is a day that has been celebrated by Americans as the day commemorating the passage of the Declaration of Independence, the day when the 13 American colonies severed their political connections with Great Britain and declared themselves to be the United States of America. The document was unanimously adopted by the Continental Congress and was signed by 56 people. These were the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Although 56 people did indeed sign the declaration, it didn't occur on July 4. It was two days prior, on July 2, that the declaration was drafted, a day that John Adams referred to as "the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America," predicting that it "will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival." Revisions (all 86 of them) were made on July 3, and the following day it was adopted.

However, it still wasn't signed on July 4, it was merely adopted on this day. Delegates didn't begin signing the document until almost one month later, on August 2, 1776, and the last signature wasn't completed until November 4. The only person to sign it on July 4 was John Hancock. George Washington was stationed in New York City at the time and wasn't one of the signers. (These are the guns that helped fight the Revolutionary War.)

24/7 Tempo would like you to meet the signers of the Declaration of Independence. To compile our list of all 56 delegates, we drew on sources such as USHistory.org, the website of the non-profit Philadelphia-based Independence Hall Association, as well as from the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence (DSDI), the Massachusetts Historical Society, the U.S. Department of State Office of the Historian, and Encyclopedia Britannica.

Meet the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
