Malaysian Airlines Flight 370

Certain mysteries have plagued civilization for centuries. Puzzles like the Lost City of Thonis-Heracleion that have bewildered the masses for centuries as to how entire cities could disappear. But these aren't the only mysteries. People have simply vanished, gone without a trace, and have become some of the most puzzling disappearances ever.

According to information from the U.S. Department of Justice's National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, or NamUS database, more than 600,000 people disappear each year in the U.S. In August 2024 alone, there were 1,155 missing persons cases created, and currently, more than 25,000 persons are still missing. Some people are eventually found but a significant number remain unaccounted for.

It's not only people who mysteriously vanish. It's their vessels that disappear with them. Several planes have simply disappeared, like five Navy planes in 1945 that went missing over the Bermuda Triangle and Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 that vanished without a trace, along with the 239 people on board.

24/7 Tempo looked into reports from websites like the FBI, History, and Historic Mysteries to assemble a list of those gone without a trace: history's most puzzling disappearances ever. Most incidents happened in the U.S., but some reports are from other global regions.

This list is not exhaustive and covers mostly cases that have been extensively reported on by the media. We have not included missing persons who were later discovered deceased. (For more disappearances, see famous people who mysteriously disappeared, and are still missing.)

Here are those gone without a trace: history's most puzzling disappearances ever:
