Malaysian Airlines Flight 370

People love a good mystery. So much so, that we have an entire book genre dedicated to them. However, some unsolved mysteries aren't fiction and involved real people. At any given time, the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUS) database lists roughly 100,000 people are reported missing. Up to 600,000 people vanish each year and although some are eventually found—sometimes with new identities—many are never found.

24/7 Tempo referenced websites including the FBI, History, and Historic Mysteries to gather this list of notorious missing-persons cases. Most incidents occurred in North America, but some reports are from elsewhere in the world. It's not possible to cover all of them, so we were selective. Our list doesn't include people who were found deceased, and mostly includes cases the media covered extensively. For more on these and other famous disappearances, see famous people who mysteriously disappeared, and are still missing.
