The Oxford Dictionary defines a fort as "a fortified building or strategic position". This explains why cities and towns in nations worldwide have been constructing these garrisons since ancient times – to protect their regions from outside assaults and provide security for those who lived within its confines. The oldest known fort in the world, called Amnya, was built in Siberia about 8,000 years ago, built by hunter-gatherers which is evidence that even in early times, forts were a necessary component to communities.

Compared to other nations, the United States is a relatively young country, established 248 years ago. However, even before America was founded by our Forefathers, forts were an integral part of life. According to the National Park Service, one of the first things settlers did when they arrived in America was to build forts. This was done to establish ownership and provide security against other nations trying to assert dominance and take the land.

Some forts survived the conflicts, but others, like those in Jamestown, Virginia, are remains of what once was. Before the U.S. became independent, wars plagued North America, as the British, French, and Spaniards fought for control of the early colonies, with Native Americans sometimes fighting alongside them or launching their own offensives. European settlers, like so many before them, constructed hundreds of forts to protect their territories, as they battled for control of the New World.

To determine historic military forts built before the founding of America, 24/7 Tempo consulted websites including Legends of America, Military History Fandom, and the National Park Service. In most cases, the original forts have not survived intact, but in addition to some surviving structures, the sites contain ruins, reconstructed facilities, or historically accurate replicas of the original fort grounds. (This list is not exhaustive.)

Note that many of these forts remained in use after American independence. (These are the longest wars of all time.) These forts played significant roles, besides defending seaports from foreign navies and deterring attacks on the frontier. They were also the sites of important historical events, including the signing of treaties, visits from famous figures, and – in the case of Fort Johnson – the first raising of the South Carolina state flag.

The advances in modern warfare have all but rendered forts obsolete. Many fort sites are now located in city or state parks, often with visitor centers, museums, and programs of events, while others may be temporarily closed due to storm damage, flooding, or archaeological work. (In some areas, stadiums are considered the fortresses of the region, especially for fans of team Argentina who won the 2024 Copa America.)

Here are military forts that predate the birth of America.
