15 Inventions Americans Often Get Credit For, but Didn’t Invent

America has a long history of absorbing ideas, traditions, foods, and technologies from around the world and making them feel distinctly American. Immigrants brought familiar recipes, games, tools, and customs with them, while foreign inventions crossed oceans and found enormous new audiences in the United States. Over time, many became so deeply embedded in American culture that their original roots were largely forgotten.

That does not mean the United States played no role in their success. But popularizing an invention is not the same as creating it, and the distinction has become blurred in many familiar stories.

From household products and popular foods to transportation and entertainment, these are 15 inventions widely associated with America that actually originated somewhere else.
