No matter the circumstances surrounding it, death is usually tragic. What may seem like a blessing to some, is a disaster to others, and when a person is murdered, it often takes a darker and unfortunate turn. There are various methods of murder – from serial killers who may kill for thrills, or power and control, to hit men, those hired with a specific intention. Criminal homicide isn't cut and dry, there are varying types as well, from manslaughter and first-degree to self-defense and second-degree.

Compared to other methods of murder, hit men, or contract killing, is strictly business. When an organization requires the disposal of a person for one reason or another, they often hire professionals who can kill quickly, discreetly, and leave little trace. Just like every profession, some hitmen have excelled in their chosen profession and are remembered as the most successful hitmen in history.

Not all contract killers and hitmen work for criminal organizations. While many of the killers listed here honed their skills for organized crime syndicates like the Cosa Nostra and the Russian mob, there's one killer who worked with a license to kill from his country's government. However you view it, contract killing is a dirty business made for a particular type of person. (Then there is the killer of another sort – cancer – that recently took the life of actress Shannon Doherty.)

To compile a list of the most notorious assassins in history, 24/7 Tempo consulted a range of crime and lifestyle publications including All That's Interesting and The New York Times. Next, we selected hitmen from a range of eras and organizations who, through prolificity or fame, made a noticeable cultural impact. After that, we confirmed biographical information using sites like Britannica. (For specifically female criminals, discover 30 of the most brutal female criminals in world history.)
