The most recent failed assassination attempt was on former President Donald Trump just two days before the RNC Convention. Activists and other political figures are common targets.

History has shown us that not all leaders or public figures are loved and admired by all. Numerous politicians, activists, celebrities, musicians, and other people of note have been assassinated. Even as early as the 23 century BCE, this violent way of dealing with public figures was carried out with the murder of the Egyptian pharaoh Teti, thought to be the earliest known assassination victim.

These kinds of attacks appear to occur much more frequently, especially in the U.S. where would-be assailants have little difficulty acquiring firearms. In other nations like Japan, which has one of the most strict gun control laws, assassinations are shocking. Last July, while delivering a speech, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated, a killing that was highly alarming because this nation is one of the safest in the world. (The gunman reportedly used a homemade weapon.)

To compile a list of some of the most notorious and impactful assassinations in American history, 24/7 Tempo reviewed historical sources such as History and Encyclopedia Britannica. Nearly all of the assassinations on this list were carried out using a gun. Several other near misses, including the shooting of President Ronald Reagan, also featured firearms. (These are other famous failed assassinations.)
