When a Single Bullet Alters a Nation: Assassinations With Global Consequences

The majority of assassinations, with very few exceptions, are fueled by political motivation. Whether to seize power, seek retribution, undermine a regime, or prevent a new one from taking over, assassins have targeted those in power, often acting alone or on behalf of a larger organization or country. These events usually have unfortunate aftermaths, often involving political destabilization.

Although there is, on occasion, a positive outcome in the aftermath. A perfect example is the shooting death of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay officeholder in San Francisco. As tragic as his slaying was, it led to greater understanding and acceptance of the LGBTQ community nationwide. But what other assassinations have altered history's course, and what have we learned from these deaths?

To identify these moments in history, 24/7 Tempo has referred to such sites as Historyhit, Historyplex, History, and a few others. We exercised editorial discretion in compiling the final list, based on each assassination's long-term effects. Sometimes the outcome is almost immediately disastrous, but others caused a slow transformation in their affected organizations. Let's discuss these assassinations in detail now.
