10 Single Decisions That Changed Modern History

History is often explained through big, sweeping forces: economic pressure, cultural change, new technology, political movements, shifting alliances, and wars. Those forces absolutely matter, but they do not always move on their own. Sometimes, the direction of history changes because one person makes one decision at exactly the right, or wrong, moment.

These moments can be easy to overlook because they are often wrapped inside much larger events. A single choice made in a crisis, a private meeting, a military standoff, or a moment of hesitation can end up reshaping countries, changing governments, starting conflicts, preventing disasters, or altering the lives of millions of people.

In this list, we’re looking at ten moments when one person’s decision changed the course of modern history. Some choices were carefully planned, others were rushed or impulsive, and some were made under extraordinary pressure. But in each case, one decision became far bigger than the person who made it.
