The Cold War began shortly after the end of World War II and dragged on for approximately 45 years. This conflict was waged between the world's two main superpowers at the time, the United States and the Soviet Union, and was a period of geopolitical tension between Communist nations and democracies of the West. While neither side conducted military campaigns, some events almost led to a third World War, namely the Berlin Crisis and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Since the Cold War ended, with the collapse of the Soviet Union, many myths and so-called 'facts' regarding America's involvement in the conflict have emerged. Social media often allows the dissemination of misinformation, and many users were not alive during the Cold War. Conspiracy theories are rife and misinformation is commonplace.

To assess and debunk many of the most crucial myths surrounding Cold War America, we consulted several published misconception lists regarding the Cold War to see which misinformation was frequently repeated enough to be featured. Then, we studied primary and secondary sources to find out the facts as told by historians.

We did our best to consult sources from many angles to determine the reality of the situation without a heavy bias toward any singular party in the conflict. As with any geopolitical conflict, sources from the major players in the engagement tend to favor one side over another. (Here are 17 Cold War sites you can still visit in the U.S.)
