The Most Disastrous Movies Adapted from Video Games

When a great story exists, whether it's from a beloved novel like "The Godfather", renowned historical plays like the works of William Shakespeare, comic books like "Spider Man", and even video games, you can rest assured that Hollywood will find a way to adapt it into a movie. Of course, not all are met with success. Some are box office gold, while others are complete failures, and many video game movie adaptations are utterly disastrous.

Video game adaptations can be less-than-stellar for several reasons, but most often because the storylines, which can play out for more than 40 hours in the game world, are typically condensed into a two-hour movie. This is never enough time to tell the complete tale, and the film winds up becoming a different version, with storylines that screenwriters have altered to fit the format.

Because studios generally bank on the game's name to draw audiences, the film fails to maintain interest and soon fails at the box office (However, some were financial successes despite reviews. "Warcraft" grossed $439M worldwide and "Resident Evil" films collectively made over $1.2B). It also doesn't help that some of these movies had limited budgets and lacked the special effects needed to live up to the hype. However, since 2019 the trend of video game adaptations as disasters has improved. "Detective Pikachu" (2019), "Sonic the Hedgehog" (2020/2022), and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" (2023) all scored well critically and commercially.

To determine the most disastrous video game movie adaptations in history, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of June 2024, weighting all ratings equally. Only movies with at least 10,000 IMDb user votes were considered. Director information is from IMDb.

This post was updated on October 30, 2025 to clarify that the "poor performance" trend has improved since 2019, update the number of IMDb votes for Warcraft and Resident Evil, and list examples of financial successes despite poor public reception.
