Who doesn't love a little mystery? Puzzle and mystery movies are a great way to pass the time. Watching them can be frustrating as you try to figure out the next scene. It's hard to determine what makes a movie fit the theme of puzzles. For the sake of this article, puzzle movies refer to films with mystery. These can be movies about solving a case, a game, an idea, or more. Mysteries are thrilling. They can leave us guessing and squinting at the screen for more.

Puzzle movies often have brilliant twists that leave viewers dropping their jaws. Some of the best puzzle movies with twists include "Life of Pi," "Atonement," and "The Sixth Sense." Some puzzle movies aren't all that surprising but move in every direction, like "Pulp Fiction." In these movies, the scenes of the film are out of order. (If you like movies with unexpected twists, read our article on 15 movies with the most unexpected and heartbreaking endings.)

An honorary mention not in our article is "Clue." This hilarious and wacky puzzle movie was released in 1985 and is based on the board game of the same name. As you can imagine, the movie is about a puzzle or game the characters have to solve. We as the audience also try to solve it. Caution – spoiler ahead! At the end of "Clue," the audience is presented with multiple possible endings before the true ending is revealed.

Methodology

To determine the best puzzle movies, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of May 2024, weighting all ratings equally. Documentaries were not considered. Director information is from IMDb.
