It never fails. Whenever a great video game comes out and becomes a hit, Hollywood wants to get a piece of the action. Video game adaptations have been a major trend since the first live-action “Super Mario Bros” movie in 1993. Since then, there have been a few good video game movies, such as “Detective Pikachu” and the animated film, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” However, most video game adaptations are poor in quality. Today, we’ll tell you about the worst movies based on video games.

You’ll find games on this list in a variety of genres. There are several notoriously bad horror game films, like “Silent Hill,” the Resident Evil films, and the 2005 version of “Doom.” There are also plenty of adventure movies that you should avoid, such as “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and “Monster Hunter.” Movie studios have also tried to convert 2D fighting games, like “Mortal Kombat,” “DOA: Dead or Alive,” and “Street Fighter” to the big screen with disastrous results. Of course, the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider films also make an appearance here.

There are many reasons why these are the worst movies based on video games. Often, it’s because there’s not enough story in a game that can be told during a two-hour film. To make up for this, the screenwriters will typically make things up, and the results don’t make much sense. In many cases, the studio just hopes audiences will show up based on the game's name. Even if this works, the film typically doesn’t have legs and soon fails at the box office. Finally, many of these movies have limited budgets, so they don’t get the special effects they need to live up to the hype. You should definitely skip these films. To determine the worst movies based on video games, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of June 2024, weighting all ratings equally. Only movies with at least 10,000 IMDb user votes were considered. Director information is from IMDb.
