Many of us grew up playing video games. Whether you were a "Super Mario Bros" aficionado or had a penchant for "Pikachu," you were most likely one of many who were excited when Hollywood decided to make movie adaptations of your favorite game. Although it was done quite well the first few times around – and to great success – with films like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and "Detective Pikachu." But not every video game translates well to the big screen. The worst video game movie adaptations below are just a few examples.
Video games often don't translate well to the big screen because two hours isn't enough time to tell a story arc that has typically developed over many years. Studios often hope the name is bankable and audiences will show up based on that alone (it seemed to work for "Resident Evil" but hopes aren't high for the purported live-action "Legend of Zelda"). (After this article, check out The Most Followed Video Game Franchises in the US.)
To determine the worst video game movie adaptations, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of June 2024, weighting all ratings equally. Only movies with at least 10,000 IMDb user votes were considered. Director information is from IMDb.
