Movie sequels can be hit or miss, and just because an original film was a blockbuster hit doesn't necessarily mean the follow-up film is guaranteed to be as successful. This was quite apparent even in the early days of Hollywood when the first feature-length sequel, "The Fall of a Nation", premiered in 1916. The sequel to the 1915 film, "The Birth of a Nation," was a commercial failure.

However, this is not indicative of all films or film franchises. There are many sequels that not only do well but far outshine their predecessor. Classic sequels from decades past and more recent movie franchises have managed to upend expectations and outperformed the originals. (Here's a ranking of the best action movie of all time.)

To determine which film sequels were better than the first, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator.

All ratings were weighted equally to determine the movie sequels that outshine the original. We considered only movies with at least 5,000 audience votes on either IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes. One film listed is technically a "prequel," but was considered a sequel since it came after the original.

For franchises that have been rebooted with new lead actors, such as "Spider-Man" and "James Bond," we compared only films starring the same lead actor. (Check out the 25 worst movie sequels of all time.)
