Depending on where you live, certain genres of films are more popular than others but in the United States (and Canada), when it comes to which movies top the box office, action and adventure reign supreme. These genres have been at the top for the past two decades, with both men (90%) and women (86%) being drawn to this genre's testament of excitement, violence, and acts of physical might.

Arguably, the first action movie ever made was "The Great Train Robbery" in 1903, a film that featured concrete portrayals of action and violence amidst a train robbery. The film was so realistic that audiences reportedly hid for cover when a gun was pointed at the screen. As time went on, action movies blossomed into a variety of depictions, including spies, police procedurals, samurai stories, westerns, and war. (Here are the best war movies of all time.)

The genre also brought innovations in film like stuntmen, pyrotechnics, and computer-generated imagery (CGI). Today, action films have grown into a powerhouse of filmmaking, often demanding the biggest budgets and captivating audiences with near-mythological themes of good versus evil, and man triumphing over insurmountable struggles.

They may not always have the best plots, but they entertain the viewer with each death-defying stunt, car chase, and thrilling performance (action is even highly prized in the gaming world, with Nintendo Switch adding four classic games like "The Legend of Zelda," and "Turok Dinosaur Hunter.")

To determine the greatest action movies ever made, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of October 2023, weighting all ratings equally. We considered only movies with at least 5,000 audience votes on either IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes. Directorial credits are from IMDb.
