The most popular genre in the United States, with 34% of the box office revenue in 2023, action movies generally have it all: adventure, explosions, excitement, shootouts, car chases, and perhaps a little romance sprinkled in. Since the first action movie, The Great Train Robbery in 1903, the genre has expected to include a variety of depictions, from spies and westerns to wars and samurai stories. The genre also brought innovations in film with stuntmen, pyrotechnics, and computer-generated imagery (CGI). The action films of today are vastly different than those of the past, having grown into movie powerhouses, often demanding the biggest budgets and captivating audiences with near-mythological themes of good versus evil, but bigger doesn't necessarily always mean better. To determine the most iconic action movies ever created, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of October 2023, weighting all ratings equally. We considered only movies with at least 5,000 audience votes on either IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes. Directorial credits are from IMDb.
