Low-Budget Action Movies That Made More Than 1,000% Back

Action movies have dominated the box office for decades, and it is easy to see why. Big stunts, chase scenes, explosions, fight sequences, and larger-than-life heroes tend to draw massive crowds. In the U.S. alone, action films account for about 34% of all box office revenue, making the genre one of the most commercially powerful in the movie business.

But not every hugely profitable action movie started with a blockbuster budget. Some of the genre’s biggest financial winners were made for surprisingly little money, then went on to earn many times their production cost. These films prove that a smart concept, strong word of mouth, or perfectly timed release can sometimes outperform even the most expensive studio bets.

To identify the low-budget action movies with the biggest returns, 24/7 Tempo reviewed global box office and production budget data from Opus Data by Nash Information Services. Films were ranked by return on investment, comparing worldwide box office earnings with production costs. Box office totals were adjusted for inflation using historical ticket price data from the National Association of Theatre Owners.

Only films with an inflation-adjusted global box office of at least $10 million were included. IMDb user ratings and Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer scores were also reviewed, while genre classifications and director credits came from IMDb.
