Taking a child to the movie theater to see a new film occasionally feels like a coin toss. Sometimes, you walk away feeling entertained and happy to discover a new treasure. Other times, the movie itself fell flat. The question “What makes a kid’s movie great?” receives different answers depending on who you ask. However, the consensus is that children love good entertainment and not in the toilet humor, gross, or silly ways that many writers believe. A great kid’s movie will have memorable characters and an exciting plot and will be appropriate for all ages. Additionally, many of the highest-grossing kids’ movies have an important lesson to teach. Some important messages that one can see in these movies include how to find your strength apart from family (as in Moana) or finding an unexpected source to help comfort you during grief (like in UP!)
While it’s true that most kids love cartoons, they also enjoy live-action films geared towards their own interests. Exciting, action-packed, and funny, kids love these qualities just as much as adults do. When a film hits the movie theaters, whether or not it does well often depends on the parent’s motivation to also sit through the film. One thing that some writers may need help understanding is that silly plots will only take the movie so far. Sure, sometimes it can be funny and even some great kids films have a bit of these characteristics, but the most successful movies at the box office forgo stuffing the film completely with silly plots and bathroom humor. Instead, they provide children with a fun watch that doesn’t sacrifice their intelligence.
As you can see on this movie list, most top-grossing kid’s movies have a few things in common. They are exciting and entertaining without relying too heavily on complete silliness to entertain. Instead, these movies are sweet and delightful, which parents enjoy just as much as their children.
