50 Terrifying Masterpieces Every Horror Buff Should See

The horror genre is renowned for pushing boundaries, offering films that span a variety of subgenres, including psychological thrillers, monster tales, supernatural horrors, zombie stories, and much more. It is not a genre for everyone, but for those who are fans, there is nothing better than terrifying masterpieces.

The film industry has been a fan of horror films almost since the beginning of motion picture history, having created the first short horror film, "Le Manoir du Diable" ("The House of the Devil") in France in 1896. The changes in these terrifying masterpieces have only improved, with the industry using various fear-inducing techniques that cover a broad spectrum.

To determine the 50 terrifying masterpieces every horror buff should see, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of early October 2023, weighting all ratings equally.
