Today, many people fight against exercising and obesity is currently considered an epidemic. In the U.S. 41.9% of adults are obese. These rising figures are a combination of poor diet and lack of exercise but people still have choices of what to eat and whether to exercise. It may seem incredulous now, but at one point in time, doctors advised women to avoid vigorous exercise because they believed it would cause exhaustion, fertility issues, nervous disorders, and more. Not to mention it was seen as unladylike. This left women with no choice but to be inventive and innovative if they wanted to stay in shape.

Here are some of the most interesting images from the early 20th century that showcase innovative activities for the time.
