Many of today's sports have been around for centuries, ancient athletic traditions still practiced around the world that have virtually remained unchanged. Cave paintings dating from almost 9,000 years ago, such as the Cave of Swimmers, contain Neolithic pictographs depicting people with bent limbs to suggest swimming, which suggests people may have engaged in competitions at an early period.

It wasn't until the ancient Greeks invented the Olympic Games that the concept of regulated sports competitions was invented. Remarkably, many of the first sports recorded in these ancient Olympic Games still exist in similar forms today. The rules may have changed somewhat and who can play has changed as well – women were not permitted to play or even attend the ancient games – but today, these ancient athletic traditions are open for all who qualify. (For more on Olympians, discover the oldest Olympic athletes in sports history.)

To compile a list of ancient athletic traditions still practiced around the world, 24/7 Tempo consulted a range of databases and history sports publications including Oldest.org, Sports Brief, and Britannica. Next, we selected sports that appeared in records from thousands of years ago. After that, we confirmed aspects of each sport and its history using sites like The History of Fighting and The World History Encyclopedia.
