Obesity is an issue that continues to be a serious and widespread public health issue, both across the globe and in the United States. Rates continue to rise, and according to the CDC, one in five adults in every state is considered obese. While other factors like certain medicines, genes, gut microbiome, poor sleep, stress, and more can add to the issue, diet and exercise also play a significant role.

Today, the options for keeping fit are aplenty, especially for women, who can fully participate in sports and exercise, whether in team sports or at gyms, but this was not always the case. Women of the past – our mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers – faced significant societal barriers when exercising. For years, exercise was simply not seen as ladylike. This led to a bit of creativity and invention.

Look at some of the most fascinating photos from the early 20th century that showcase innovative activities for the time — and then marvel at just how far women's fitness and extracurricular activities have evolved. (And since we're talking about women — check out the greatest women innovators and inventors.)

We took each pic and restored the color so that we could get a sense of what it was like to live in those times.
