12 Great Movies Based on True Stories You Probably Missed

When people see the “based on a true story” label, they tend to ignore it. Its use has become so liberal that it’s hard to take seriously. The movies that are truly faithful to reality are often the ones where you already know the outcome before you have even pressed play.

There’s a third, stranger category. Although it’s rare, it exists. These are movies inspired by events so unbelievable that filmmakers sometimes had to tone them down to make them feel realistic. Today, we’re looking at movies that fall into or come close to this particular category. Some slipped by without the audience they deserved. Others you may have seen without fully understanding the events that inspired them or the questions surrounding those accounts. Either way, these twelve examples show that reality can be stranger than fiction.
