From War Dramas to Romances: John Wayne’s Non-Western Films, Ranked

John Wayne is the epitome of the American Cowboy. Having appeared in more than 80 Westerns, from classic hits like “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” “Stagecoach,” and “True Grit,” which earned him a Best Actor Oscar, it was a role that he seemed born to portray. For those who are familiar with Wayne’s career and filmogrophy, his work expanded beyond playing gunslingers and legendary lawmen of the Wild West.

During his legendary career that spanned 50 years, Wayne appeared in over 175 films but only a fraction of these were Westerns. His roles ranged from playing a diplomat, football coach, soliders in many movies notably in “Sands of Iwo Jima”, treasure hunter, and many others. War films featured strongly in his career calling on his signature toughness and vocal patriotism. (These are the most accurate war movies of all time.)

To identify John Wayne’s non-Western films, 24/7 Tempo reviewed his acting roles in movies listed on his IMDb actor filmography page, reviewed a database of over 17,000 movies, and selected all of the movies John Wayne was in that were not Westerns. The combined score is an index of the movie’s IMDb rating, Rotten Tomatoes audience score, and Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score. Genre and casting data is from IMDb.

Sadly, nearly half of the cast and crew went on to develop cancer, including Wayne who died of stomach cancer in 1979.

No one will ever know if these deaths were connected with the filming location. Wayne plays Mongolian leader Genghis Khan, who falls in love with the daughter of an enemy. The combination of his American accent, and his dark make up did not go down well.
