The much-anticipated trailer for the next Alien movie, Romulus, has dropped this month. Sci-fi is eternally popular and attracts a range of stars but one name that you do not normally associate with the genre is John Wayne. However, the iconic star of numerous Westerns has several little-known links with the Star Wars series! Did you know that John Wayne was actually a space cowboy? Look a little closer and you will see a cowboy influence in some of the scenes. Some of them are modeled on ideas from 'The Searchers'. It was revealed in 2007 that Wayne even had a cameo as as the voice of one of the aliens on Tatooine in 1977's 'A New Hope'.

This leads us to wonder what other movies, that weren't Westerns, Wayne appeared in during his legendary career that spanned 50 years and over 175 films. We know that he appeared in 89 Westerns. His final film, "The Shootist," earned him an Oscar nomination for playing a dying gunslinger. But his career went far beyond the prairie. He also played a soldier, ship captain, treasure hunter, diplomat, football coach, and many other roles. War films featured strongly in his career calling on his signature toughness, leadership, and a willingness to sacrifice. These are the most accurate war movies of all time.

To identify John Wayne's best and worst movies other than Westerns, 24/7 Tempo reviewed his acting roles in movies listed on his IMDb actor filmography page, reviewed a database of over 17,000 movies, and selected all of the movies John Wayne was in that were not Westerns. The combined score is an index of the movie's IMDb rating, Rotten Tomatoes audience score, and Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score. Genre and casting data is from IMDb.

Here are a selection of John Wayne's movies outside the Western Genre – from best to worst.
