The World’s Largest Navy Isn’t the U.S. – Here’s Which Country Has It

Navies play a crucial role in protecting trade routes, projecting military power, and responding to global crises. From aircraft carriers and destroyers to submarines and patrol vessels, naval fleets reveal a great deal about a nation's military strength and strategic priorities.

While the United States is widely known for its powerful military, it does not currently operate the largest naval fleet in the world. Several other countries maintain enormous numbers of ships and submarines designed to patrol coastlines, safeguard commerce, and assert influence across the seas.

To determine which countries have the largest naval fleets, we reviewed the 2024 Military Strength Ranking from Global Firepower, which tracks defense data for 145 countries. Countries were ranked based on the total number of military ships and submarines in their fleets, along with additional details on aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, corvettes, patrol vessels, and submarines.

Here are the countries with the largest naval fleets in the world.
