The United States has one of the largest and strongest militaries in the world. Comprised of six branches – the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and the Space Force which was established in 2019 – all branches, with the exception of the Space Force, have a special forces unit, or elite special forces. These units are highly exclusive, elite squads dedicated to sensitive missions including special reconnaissance, covert surveillance, and undercover raids.

24/7 Tempo consulted multiple sources, including the Armed Forces History Museum, CBSNews, Special Ops Magazine, and Military.com, to compile a list of the best of the best: the nation's elite special forces. Details about these units came from their websites or the American Special Ops site.

We focused on renowned units like the Navy SEALs, the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group, also known as DEVGRU or SEAL Team 6, which operates within the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command; Marine Force Recon; the U.S. Army Special Forces, commonly known as the Green Berets, Delta Force; the Air Force's Special Operations Squadrons within the Air Force Special Operations Command and the Pararescue Jumpers (PJs); the Coast Guard's Maritime Safety & Security Teams, and Central Intelligence Agency's Special Activities Center, the CIA's paramilitary special operations unit.
