When it comes to drinking, many of us start with a toast. We like to raise a glass and give a little shout-out, whether short and sweet, like "cheers," "sláinte," and "À votre santé," or longer like "Here's to love, laughter, and happily ever after". These words of wisdom always seem to precede that first drink with friends, family, or co-workers, and is our way of wishing good health to all.

But there are many more wise words attributed to alcohol and it often seems as though many people, those both celebrated in their widespread fame to those famous at the local dive bar, offer up a variety of wise quips about adult beverages. It isn't just sports quotes and political witticisms that pepper our celebratory glass-raising but rather drinking-centric quotes that manage to stand the test of time in their humor.

Alcohol may not be for everyone, but for those who do imbibe, it often brings people together, a common bond "over a drink" that allows us to unwind and enjoy a good time. Naturally, we enjoy capturing our joyous occasions with words, which is why great drinking quotes have been reiterated through the years. Some may be instantly recognizable, while others are lesser-known gems. Others were uttered by legendary wits, while the minds behind other quotes have been lost to time.

But the next time you get together with your friends for a pint or two, keep these in mind and you're bound to get a couple of laughs, especially if you live in a state where people drink the most alcohol — these are the drunkest states in the U.S.
