America’s Drunkest States: See Where Your State Ranks

Despite cautions from law enforcement, health agencies, and educators, the U.S. continues to grapple with issues related to alcohol consumption. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every six American adults engages in binge drinking, which is defined as the consumption of five or more drinks on one occasion for men or four or more drinks on one occasion for women.(Here are 23 ways a drinking habit can harm you.)

As with other behavior, excessive drinking varies from state to state. To identify America’s drunkest states – those in which the highest percentage of residents 18 and older report indulging in binge or heavy drinking with a 30-day period, 24/7 Tempo data from the 2023 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, a joint program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

Engaging in binge drinking poses significant risks to health, contributing to the development of severe conditions like liver disease, cancer, heart disease, and hypertension. Each year, excessive alcohol consumption leads to over 140,000 deaths in the U.S. alone.(Read how deaths from alcohol-related cirrhosis have gone up almost every years since 2000.)

Binge drinking additionally increases the risk of motor-vehicle accidents, with alarming statistics. In 2021, alcohol-related traffic fatalities accounted for the deaths of 13,384 individuals in the country. On a daily basis, approximately 37 Americans lose their lives in crashes involving drunk driving.

The regions with the highest levels of excessive drinking are located in the Plains, Midwest, and Far West. Among the states with the highest rates of alcohol-related driving fatalities, four include Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Alaska. These states, known for their vast size, often involve motorists covering considerable distances after a night of drinking. Additionally, these areas are among the coldest in the nation, which might contribute to increased alcohol consumption.
