The United States has historically been a nation known as the "Land of Opportunity." It is a country constructed on the ideals of equal opportunity; a place where many have come to take a chance on the American dream. Many people arrived to begin or advance their careers, becoming well-known celebrities. Some went one step further and applied for U.S. citizenship. These famous foreigners who became naturalized U.S. citizens were so vested in their new countries that many made sure to take part in the most important right of a citizen – the right to vote.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services have detailed guidance on eligibility for naturalization. Irrespective of how successful or famous some of the celebrities on our list were, they did not all find it easy to become U.S. citizens. There are many steps and several forms and appointments to complete. Whatever their motivations, many famous people have traveled across a border – or around the globe – to make their mark in America. (Meanwhile, these famous Americans gave up their U.S. citizenship for political reasons)
