As America gears up for the election on November 5th 2024, we are mindful that one of the most important rights of U.S. citizens is the right to vote. Whilst there are some famous Americans who are no longer U.S. citizens for political reasons, there are plenty of famous people who did the exact opposite. In the creative arts, sciences, and industry, there are plenty of influential Americans who did not start out as Americans at all.

U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services have detailed guidance on eligibility for naturalization. Irrespective of how successful or famous some of the celebrities on our list were, they did not all find it easy to become U.S. citizens. There are many steps and several forms and appointments to complete.

Some foreigners on our list came here to start or advance their careers and some specifically applied for U.S citizenship so that they could vote. Whatever their motivations, many famous people have traveled across a border – or around the globe – to make their mark in America, and as Americans. Let's meet some of them.
