European Cities Where Tourists Should Be Extra Careful After Dark
Europe is home to some of the world’s most exciting destinations, from historic capitals and cultural centers to cities famous for their nightlife. However, even a generally safe city can have neighborhoods where visitors should exercise extra caution after dark. Tourist districts, crowded entertainment areas, quiet side streets, and transportation hubs can create opportunities for pickpocketing, scams, harassment, and other crimes.
This list highlights European cities where travelers may want to be especially alert when walking alone at night. That does not mean these destinations are unsafe or should be avoided entirely. Risks can vary dramatically by neighborhood and time of day. Naples is a nice city in Italy with plenty of history and great pizza. Also, it is one of the most popular tourist spots in Italy. But Naples has a checkered past due to its affiliation with the mafia. Ultimately, it is also the home of the Camorra, one of the oldest criminal organizations in Italy.
