America’s Most Memorable First Ladies

The role of "first lady" in the United States has no formal definition. While it typically refers to the president's wife, the title has also been used for non-spouses who assume the responsibilities of the position in an unofficial capacity.

The responsibilities of the first lady have never been officially outlined, but she is generally expected to serve as the official host of the First Household. Duties such as organizing dinners, overseeing renovations, and representing the president have traditionally been part of her role.

Over the years, some first ladies have fully embraced the role, using its platform and visibility to advocate for causes ranging from highway beautification to AIDS awareness. Others have been more reserved or affected by illness, choosing to avoid political engagement altogether.

To identify the first ladies with the best (and worst) reputations, 24/7 Tempo analyzed the 2020 Siena College Expert Survey of American First Ladies, conducted by the Siena College Research Institute in Loudonville, New York.

The Institute has conducted this survey of first ladies six times since 1982. For the 2020 edition, researchers gathered responses from 209 historians, political scientists, and scholars online between February 12 to June 23, 2019. Participants ranked 40 former first ladies on a scale of 1 to 5 in 10 categories: background, value to country, White House stewardship, courage, accomplishments, integrity, leadership, independence, public image, and value to the president. Researchers then calculated an average score for each first lady, and the final rankings were based on these overall mean scores in comparison to one another.

Note that first ladies are referred to by their first names in the summaries below to avoid confusion with their husbands. (Can you solve these real "Jeopardy!" questions about U.S. presidents?)
