Television is vastly different from what it once was. Viewers of yesteryear were content with the offerings on basic television and incorporated many of these shows into their regular routines. Today, audiences are inundated with an extensive variety of programming shown on numerous streaming platforms. Yet, many return to these classic sitcoms of the past, shows that defined the American spirit.

These iconic classic sitcoms have remained popular thanks in part to reruns and syndication. Many of these timeless shows capture the American spirit and the trials and tribulations of life just as well as today's popular shows. Some of these shows even feature famous duos that are the 34 most iconic duos in TV history.

To compile this list of classic sitcoms that defined the American spirit, 24/7 Tempo referenced Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator. Sitcoms with the highest ratings on IMDb, an online movie and television database owned by Amazon, were considered.

We also consulted a list of the best sitcoms of all time from Rolling Stone, an American pop culture magazine, and "TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time," published in the May 4–10, 2002 issue of TV Guide. To finalize the list, we exercised editorial discretion, weighing factors such as each sitcom's influence on the television landscape and its lasting cultural impact.

This compilation focuses exclusively on American sitcoms, omitting classics like "Fawlty Towers" and "Only Fools and Horses." Additionally, since it emphasizes classic sitcoms, those older shows that have endured and resonated across multiple generations, only those that premiered before 2000 were considered.
