While many of us like to binge current comedy hits, there are some classics that we may have overlooked for whatever reason. Though some of these shows may not be featured prominently on popular streaming platforms, these vintage shows are American cultural staples that offer up plenty of laughs and relaxing entertainment.

The streaming options available these days is vast so thankfully we can find some of these iconic comedic gems that have remained popular via reruns and syndication. Many of these timeless shows capture American identity and shared experiences just as well as today's popular shows. Some of these shows feature famous duos and you can click here for a look at the 34 most iconic duos in TV history.

To compile this list of classic sitcoms every American should watch, 24/7 Tempo referenced Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator. Additionally, we considered sitcoms with the highest ratings on IMDb, an online movie and television database owned by Amazon. We also consulted a list of the best sitcoms of all time from Rolling Stone, an American pop culture magazine, as well as "TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time," published in the May 4–10, 2002 issue of TV Guide. To finalize the list, we exercised editorial discretion, weighing factors such as each sitcom's influence on the television medium and its lasting cultural impact.

This compilation focuses exclusively on American sitcoms, omitting classics like "Fawlty Towers" and "Only Fools and Horses." Additionally, since it emphasizes classic sitcoms, only those that premiered before 2000 were considered. This isn't to discount recent classics like "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation," which have undoubtedly earned their status, but the spotlight here is on older shows that have endured and resonated across multiple generations.
