George Wendt made sitcom history through his role on Cheers, but not because the role offered intense emotional scenes and dramatic acting ability. Wendt established the importance of comedy and charm in a supporting actor role, and through a character many viewers will never forget. Today, we celebrate his life and legacy by taking a closer look at some of America's greatest sitcoms.

Several sitcoms are well-known; others may not be as widely recognized, but they deserve more attention for their flawless depiction of American life. Several shows have stood the test of time, airing in reruns and syndication for years. And now, thanks in part to streaming services and other options available, you can now catch what you might have missed before.

To compile a list of hilarious sitcoms that perfectly reflect American life, 24/7 Tempo referenced the Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator. We also referenced sitcoms with the highest ratings on IMDb, and consulted the list of the best sitcoms of all time from Rolling Stone magazine and “TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time,” a list published in the May 4–10, 2002 issue of TV Guide.
