The Most Googled Conspiracy Theory in Each U.S. State

Conspiracy theories can be fascinating to explore, and some of the strangest ones are also the most widely believed. Most people have heard of the Illuminati, but what about the idea that the Denver International Airport is hiding secret underground operations? Or the claim that dragonflies are not real insects, but tiny surveillance drones?

Even if you do not buy into any major conspiracy theories, it is hard to ignore them when so many people do. A YouGov survey found that about half of Americans believe Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone in the assassination of JFK. Another widely held belief was that President Obama was not born in the United States, with 31 percent of respondents agreeing.

It gets even more interesting when you look at which theories are most popular in each state, or even in specific cities and counties. For this slideshow, we used data from the DIRECTV provider USDIRECT and Google Search autofill to identify what each state looks up most often. There are thousands of conspiracy theories out there, but a handful consistently rise to the top.
