These WWII Fighter Planes and Pilots Are the Stuff of Legend

World War II marked a turning point in aviation with a period of unprecedented growth in aircraft production. Prior to the war, the United States Army Air Corps possessed only a few hundred airplanes, but by the war's end, the U.S. had the largest air force in history with nearly 80,000 aircraft. Here are seven legendary WWII fighter planes and their pilots, each of which performed extraordinary exploits that are still remembered today.
