These Celebrities Managed to Buy Their Way Out of Jail Time
While we will never actually know if a celebrity used money to get out of jail time, we can make guesses. Celebrities, or really the rich in general, seem to play by different rules.
How many times have you been watching the news and seen a big-name celebrity get away with drinking and driving? Assault? Or even fatal car accidents?
Although we don't know if these celebrities bribed the judges or used their connections, the internet seems to think so.
Note: These are just guesses and opinions. The celebrities listed here are always innocent until proven guilty.
Cardi B
Cardi B only got community service after taking a plea deal over the 2018 strip club attack. She pleaded guilty to third-degree assault, second-degree reckless endangerment, and two misdemeanor charges. Because she took the deal, her other charges (including two federal ones) were dropped.
Roman Polanski
When you have money, fame, time, and connections, it's easy to run away before you're convicted of a crime. Roman Polanski did just this when he fled the U.S. to Europe after he pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor (a 13-year-old). While there have been attempts to get him back to the U.S., they've all been unsuccessful. Even after he pleaded guilty and others have come forward with their stories, he continues to make movies in Europe.
Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber is one of the many celebrities to get away with driving under the influence. In 2014, in Miami, he was arrested for driving under the influence. He was 19, and although he had taken Xanax and marijuana, his blood alcohol level was low. Instead of jail time, the international pop star had to complete a 12-hour anger management course, a DUI education program, and a $50,000 charitable contribution.
Karl Malone
When Karl Malone was 20 years old, he fathered a child with a 13-year-old girl. However, he was never put on trial for this, and the child and her family never filed criminal charges. Not many people could get away with this. He also fought the family on child support, complaining that $125 a week was way too much, even when he made over $800,000 a year.
Matthew Broderick
Some accidents turn into pure tragedies. This is what happened with Matthew Broderick in 1987 while driving through Northern Ireland with Jennifer Grey. While driving on the wrong side of the road by accident, he hit another car, killing the two people in the vehicle, Margaret Doherty and Anna Gallagher.
Although he was initially charged with causing death by dangerous driving, this was lowered to careless driving, and he was fined. Broderick didn't walk away completely unscathed. He was seriously injured but could only focus on the people in the other car. Since the accident, he's visited the family members of the two who passed and gone through therapy. Many of the family members have openly forgiven Broderick, including Martin Doherty, Margaret's son, and Anna's brother.
Vince Neil
Technically, Vince Neil was sentenced to 30 days of jail time (however, he only served 15 days). This small amount of time is nothing compared to what a non-celebrity would get. On December 8, 1984, Vince Neil was driving under the influence when he hit another vehicle. The occupants in the other vehicle were seriously injured and sustained lasting brain damage, while Neil's passenger and friend, Razzle, died. Apart from the 30 days, Neil was also sentenced to 200 hours of community service and to pay $2.6 million in restitution to the victims of the crash.
Charlie Sheen
Money is a powerful thing, and so is fame. Charlie Sheen's been in the media for domestic violence a few times, but he was actually sentenced once (although he never served time). On August 2, 2010, the famous actor pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault against his wife and was sentenced to 30 days in a California rehabilitation center, 30 days of probation, and 36 hours of anger management. He pleaded guilty to this smaller charge to withdraw the other charges, one of which was federal.
Jon Hamm
Who else could still have an incredible acting career even after hazing and abusing students while in college, other than a celebrity? Jon Hamm took part in cruel hazing of other students at the University of Texas in 1990. The case was eventually dismissed, so he never got jail time for assaulting a Sigma Nu pledge. Still, the hazing was so bad that the fraternity chapter permanently disbanded.
Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan is a different person now, but is worth a mention. During the early 2000s, her crime spree (mostly drinking and driving) was all over the news for us to see, and yet she always got off lightly. In May of 2010, after multiple arrests for DUIs, Lohan missed a court date. Because of this, she was sentenced to 90 days of jail and 90 days of inpatient rehab. She only served 14 days in jail and 23 days at an inpatient rehab.
Ted Kennedy
Again. Celebrities seem to be the only ones who can get away with murder - and really rich people, although the two tend to correlate. Ted Kennedy is included in this. Late night on July 18, 1969, United States Senator Ted Kennedy accidentally drove off a bridge while intoxicated. In his car was Mary Jo Kopechne, who died in the car as she couldn't get out. He didn't report the crash till the next morning, leaving Kopechne to drown. So, what'd he get sentenced to? Ted Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident causing bodily injury and was sentenced to a two-month suspended jail sentence and lost his license for one year.
Caitlyn Jenner
Caitlyn Jenner has also been in a tragic accident, causing the death of someone. Unlike other incidents on this list, alcohol didn't play a part. Instead, Jenner accidentally rear-ended a Lexus, throwing it into oncoming traffic, where the car was struck. The driver of the Lexus was killed. Initially, she was facing vehicular manslaughter charges, although she was never charged as the police didn't find her actions wrong. While she was braking and going the speed limit, she still hit the other vehicle and got away with it.
