The 1920s in the United States was a time of prosperity and change, a decade that saw economic expansion, the rise of jazz music, new technology with cars, motion pictures, and radio, and exuberant fashion trends. Also known as the Jazz Age and the Roaring '20s, it was an era of optimism, a rising stock market, and prohibition. Of course, like many things of the time, there were also strange practices that were completely normal 100 years ago.

Gas stations were a new concept. Dating rules and expectations were changing. Speakeasies were a significant part of social life and the 19th Amendment was passed, giving women the right to vote. Gummy bears and Reese's were invented. In addition to this positive change, were some very interesting habits and customs that have gradually faded away.

To curate this list of strange practices that were completely normal 100 years ago, we used education and history sources like the Library of Congress, SCSU Hilton C. Buley Library, and History.com. (They aren't the only things that have changed. Click here to see how top U.S. cities have changed since the 1920s.)
